About Waynne James

2024 Malcolm Knowles Award for Significant Lifelong Contributions to the Field of Self-Directed Learning

Dr. Waynne James has been a distinguished professor of Adult Education for over 50 years, beginning her career in the field in 1969.  Her academic journey has taken her from Texas A&M University (3 years) to Oklahoma State University (6 years), and finally to the University of South Florida, where she has served for more than 42 years and recently attained the honor of Professor Emerita.

As a mentee of Malcolm Knowles, Dr. James has dedicated her career to bringing the principles of self-directed learning to life in every classroom she enters.  Her teaching philosophy centers on learner autonomy, empowering students to take initiative, set meaningful goals, identify resources, assess their progress, and complete personalized learning projects.  Rather than positioning herself as the "sage on the stage," Dr. James has consistently chosen to center the learner, fostering an environment of trust where true learning flourishes through student-directed journeys.

Dr. James's influence extends far beyond the classroom through her extraordinary record of mentorship.  She has directed more than 120 doctoral dissertations, along with dozens of Ed.S. and master's theses, many of which explore and apply self-directed learning principles.  Each represents a testament to her unwavering commitment to academic excellence and learner development.  Her impact continues to ripple outward through the countless educators and leaders she has mentored over the decades.

Her scholarly contributions to the field are substantial and enduring.  Dr. James was inducted into the International Adult Education Hall of Fame in 1996 and has remained actively involved in facilitating nominations and continuing the organization's activities.  She has authored over 34 peer-reviewed publications, including books, book chapters, and articles, and has delivered well over 100 presentations throughout her career.

Dr. James has been a long-time attendee and generous supporter of the International Society for Self-Directed Learning (ISSDL), contributing actively to the organization for many years.  Her passion for preserving the field's heritage is evident in her meticulous work documenting adult education research "family trees," creating longevity and sustainability by allowing future generations to understand the academic connections and scholarly bloodlines that have shaped theory and practice.  She is currently working on a similar study examining the historic scholarly connections and beginnings of the International Society of Self-Directed Learning and the International Self-Directed Learning Symposium.

Through her unique combination of academic rigor, learner empowerment, and dedication to documenting the intellectual genealogy of adult education, Dr. James has made an unparalleled impact on the field.  She embodies the vision of Malcolm Knowles and continues to shape the discipline for future generations of educators and learners alike.
